David de Gea Signs with new club 12 Months After Man United exit

De Gea Joins Serie A’s Fiorentina

David de Gea, the former Manchester United goalkeeper, has secured a new club 12 months after leaving Old Trafford. The Spanish shot-stopper has signed with Italian Serie A side Fiorentina, bringing an end to his year-long stint as a free agent.

Following the expiration of his contract with Manchester United last summer, De Gea spent the 2023-2024 season without a club. Despite receiving lucrative offers from clubs in the Middle East, De Gea chose to remain clubless, focusing instead on maintaining his fitness and preparing for the right opportunity.

Fiorentina Secures De Gea Amidst Intense Competition

This summer, several Serie A clubs showed interest in acquiring De Gea’s services. Ultimately, it was Fiorentina who won the race, confirming the signing of the 33-year-old goalkeeper. Fiorentina, who have been actively seeking to bolster their goalkeeping options, initially considered Chelsea’s Djordje Petrovic before finalizing their deal with De Gea.

Official Presentation Set for Monday

Fiorentina plans to officially present De Gea to the media on Monday. His arrival could see him reunite with Sofyan Amrabat, another former Manchester United player. Amrabat, who spent last season on loan at United, returned to Fiorentina after the English club declined to trigger the option to make his move permanent.

Potential Reunion with Amrabat

Manchester United initially signed Amrabat on a season-long loan for £8.5 million, with an option to purchase for £21.4 million. However, the Red Devils opted not to finalize the transfer after the midfielder made only ten Premier League starts. Despite this, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly still interested in Amrabat and may consider re-signing him under more favorable terms.

Fiorentina’s Ambitions for the Upcoming Season

Fiorentina finished eighth in Serie A last season and will participate in the UEFA Conference League in the upcoming campaign. The addition of De Gea is seen as a significant move to strengthen the squad as they aim to improve their domestic and European performances.
