Former Manchester United midfielder Fred has helped keep Fenerbahce in a truly remarkable title race over in Turkey.
Manchester United were hoping to be in the Premier League title race this season.
Erik ten Hag’s promising first season saw United make changes over the summer to try and take the next step.
New faces were brought in and some players were flogged to make room, such as midfielder Fred.
The Brazilian spent five years at Old Trafford but was sold to Fenerbahce for £13million last summer.
Fred scores brace in Fenerbahce win
Fred divided opinion at United, as summed up by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Roy Keane having very differing views on the Brazilian.
The 31-year-old has carved out a key role with Fenerbahce, racking up seven assists in 26 games.
Fred found the net for the first time on Sunday, hitting a brace against Trabzonspor – and those goals would prove to be crucial.
The first was an absolute screamer as Fred launched a right-footed strike into the top corner from long range.
Fred’s second was also with his right foot, breaking into the box from deep before slotting into the net.
Fenerbahce went on to win 3-2 as Trabzsonpor came from 2-0 down to make it 2-2 before Michy Batshuayi won it late on.
Fred chasing league title
That result keeps Fenerbahce right on Galatasaray’s tail in the Turkish title race.
This is proving to be a remarkable battle at the top as Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have lost just one game each this season.
Galatasaray are just two points ahead of Fenerbahce and both sides know that they can’t afford to slip up.
Third-placed Trabzonspor are 30 points behind Fenerbahce, so this has been a season of absolute dominance for Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.
