Reason Why Ederson Escaped a red card for a reckless tackle that took Darwin Nunez down following a weak back-pass from Nathan Ake(Read More)

Even though the Brazilian handed up a penalty for a reckless challenge on Darwin Nunez, Ederson was able to avoid a red card in Manchester City’s match against Liverpool.

Nathan Ake, who was on the left side of City’s defense, received the ball and, although under pressure, sent a terrible pass back to his goalkeeper. Nunez outran Ederson to the loose ball when he dashed through the penalty area in pursuit of it. After getting caught in a 50/50, the goalie unleashed a crazy challenge that sent the Liverpool forward hurtling forward. Alexis Mac Allister leveled the game after John Stones’ goal with a thunderous finish on the resulting penalty kick.

Michael Oliver only sent Ederson a yellow card, even though the Anfield crowd and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk were yelling for a red card. Ederson might not have been inadvertently preventing a clear chance for Nunez to score since he was not moving towards the goal.

But even if that were to be determined, the double jeopardy statutes would allow him to get away with a yellow card. According to the rules, a player is only to receive a yellow card if their tackle is an honest effort to gain possession of the ball. There may have been no red card for Ederson’s challenge because it was not considered careless or unruly.

From the penalty spot, Mac Allister wasted no time, sending the ball soaring past Ederson and into the left side of the goal. The goal gave Liverpool a much-needed boost to the Anfield faithful and turned the tide of the match in their favor.
