Sarina Wiegman responds on Succeeding Gareth Southgate

Lionesses of England boss Sarina Wiegman has responded to the growing speculation about her potential move to the England men’s managerial position following Gareth Southgate’s resignation. In the wake of Southgate’s departure, rumors have swirled around possible successors, with Wiegman’s name being a surprising yet prominent contender.

Gareth Southgate Resigns After Euro 2024 Final Defeat

Gareth Southgate announced his resignation as England men’s manager after an eight-year tenure, culminating in a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Southgate’s decision to step down has left a significant void, sparking widespread discussions about who will take up the mantle. Among the candidates are Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe and England Under-21s coach Lee Carsley, both seen as strong contenders for the role.

Sarina Wiegman Shuts Down Rumors

Reports from talkSPORT suggested that Wiegman, who has earned acclaim for her leadership of the Lionesses, might be in line to succeed Southgate. However, Wiegman was quick to quash these rumors following her team’s goalless draw with Sweden, which secured their qualification for Euro 2025. She addressed the speculation directly, stating:

“I think it’s really inappropriate to have that conversation. I’m with the Lionesses and very happy.”

Sarina Wiegman’s Success with the Lionesses

Since taking charge of the Lionesses in 2021, Wiegman has transformed the team into a formidable force. Under her leadership, the Lionesses clinched the 2022 European Championship, marking England’s first major football trophy since 1966. Her tactical acumen and ability to inspire her players were further evidenced when the team reached the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. In recognition of her achievements, Wiegman signed a new contract earlier this year, ensuring her stay with the team until 2027.

Wiegman’s Commitment to the Lionesses

Wiegman’s recent comments underline her commitment to the Lionesses. “I’m very happy with where I am,” she reiterated, emphasizing her focus on continuing to build on the successes achieved so far. Her steadfast dedication to her current role signals her desire to remain at the helm and continue driving the Lionesses towards further glory.

Praise for Gareth Southgate

Wiegman also took the opportunity to commend Gareth Southgate for his contributions to English football. Reflecting on his tenure, she highlighted his accomplishments, which include leading the England men’s team to consecutive European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final. “To be honest, yes, because he’s such a nice person and a great coach,” Wiegman told ITV Sport when asked if she would miss her counterpart.

“We wouldn’t see each other all the time, but when we would, it was very nice. What he has done for English football is just really incredible. Of course, they made the final again, they made the final at the last Euros too. I think he can be very, very proud of himself. I think England is very proud of him and me as a Dutchie, I’m very proud of him too.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of English Football

As the search for Southgate’s successor continues, the spotlight remains on the potential candidates who could take England to new heights. While Wiegman has ruled herself out of contention, the discussions highlight the evolving nature of football management and the increasing recognition of talent irrespective of gender. For now, Wiegman remains focused on her mission with the Lionesses, aiming to replicate and surpass the successes of the past few years.
